It seems that the first human settlements that occurred in the area of ​​Rojales are from the end of the Neolithic, between the IV and III millennium. This presence was limited to small villages of huts near the river. Later, the Bronze Age also reached the area, as manifested in the Cabezo de Particiones and Soler). With the Muslim domination, we find that the entire rural settlement of the region is structured according to the city of Orihuela. The Al-Mudawwar (Almodóvar) farmhouse stands out, which was located in the surroundings of the fortified hill of Cabezo Soler and the slopes of Inquisición Grande, a medieval settlement that can be considered Muslim Rojales and which give rise to one of the traditions of the area, the legend of La Encantá. After the Muslim domination, it can be said that Rojales is a beautiful huerta town that is surrounded by the irrigated garden, an irrigation that flourishes with the late medieval expansion of the irrigation network in the last stretches of the Segura river. This will determine the current location of the municipality and its urban hydraulic complex, which has a monumental character, being represented by the Azud, the mouths of the major ditches, the waterwheel, and the Carlos III bridge, a work that unites the population, established on both banks of the river.

Regarding the buildings, we can describe the traditional housing of the area as influenced by the Latin-Roman house, with a central patio and morphologically we can distinguish in it the hillside appearance of the traditional neighborhoods. In the town we also find on its southern slope an important architectural complex of a popular and underground type that began its construction around the 18th century. It is in those moments when Rojales begins to take the first steps to be able to become an independent population of Guardamar. That independence, he will buy from the King by paying a significant amount to the monarch’s coffers. This amount was estimated at 18 ducats per neighbor. This process of separation began in 1749 and ended in 1773, assuming the loss of the Rojales nucleus and half of the Guardamar municipal area, which will be incorporated into the new independent town that has been created.

There is also an increase in agricultural results because commercial agriculture that occurs, sees greater possibilities of output by having the possibility of shipping production in Guardamar. With all that seen, there was a general growth in sales and work in economic sectors such as textile crafts, with flax and hemp in the lead, followed by esparto fillet. In round numbers, it will turn out that Rojales will go in a short time from being a village with half of the Guardamar population to becoming, during the nineteenth century, a town that is on par with the number of inhabitants with Guardamar. In fact, Miñano, in his 1872 description of Rojales explains: “It was the flourishing population; it had about 2,500 inhabitants; the products of his garden were very rich and abundant; its peppers and artichokes supplied Cartagena, Alicante, Elche, Orihuela and even Madrid; It also produced oranges, cereals, bar, wine and oil; it had fifteen looms, a flour mill, five oil mills and an inn ”.

The municipality has experienced a series of severe catastrophes. On the one hand, there are the floods of the Segura, such as those of 1879, 1946, 1948, 1973, 1982, 1987 and 1989, although today, the problem is another, the pollution suffered by the waters. The other harsh catastrophe that Rojales experienced was the earthquake of March 21, 1829, an earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale, causing 10 deaths, 34 injuries, 319 houses destroyed and 82 damaged.
