History of Valencia
Founded in 138 BC by the Romans, Valencia, has lived through wars, has been devastated, has received many cultures … and has survived. Learn about the history of a great city, Valentia, land of the brave.
From the founding of Valencia to the 15th century
Valencia was founded by the Romans in 138 BC. C. under the name of Valentia, land of the brave. According to the Roman historian Livy, it was an award given to recently graduated soldiers. The city rises above the so-called Historic Center and Barrio del Carmen, where many buried remains are found.
In the Plaza de la Almoina, you can see the remains of the city, which was destroyed during the war between Pompey and Sertorio. Until the time of Emperor Octavian, Valencia was abandoned. During the following years the city was repopulated, and public buildings and infrastructures began to be built, such as a river port located where the Torres de Serranos are today.
Few remains and sources have been found from the Visigothic period. The only thing that remains is in the L’Almoina site, next to the Cathedral of Valencia.
Later, in the year 711, the Muslims arrived in Valencia, where a new uprising devastated the city in the year 778. During this period, Abd al Raman I built gardens, which he called Russafa, which today is the Ruzafa neighborhood. it’s still called like that. The Arabic name for Valencia is Balansiya.
After a period of splendor, and with the construction of the Arab wall by Abd al-Aziz, a certain instability appeared in Valencia. The Cid Campeador, took advantage of the occasion and drove the Arabs from the city of Turia. This did not last long. In 1102 Valencia returned to Arab hands.
With the reconquest by King Jaume I in 1238, Valencia was free and it was repopulated with families from Aragon and Catalonia. With Jaume I, Els Furs, the laws of the Kingdom of Valencia and the Llibre del Consolat de Mar, the oldest of the Maritime Law codices, were promulgated.
Pedro el Cruel, attacked Valencia twice, for the wars between the Crown of Aragon and the Crown of Castile. Valencia resisted both attacks, and was awarded the double L, for being twice loyal. That is why the city’s coat of arms bears two L.
In 1412 the Caspe Compromise was signed, and Fernando de Antequera became king of the Crown of Aragon. Of this stage, Vicente Ferrer stands out, converted in 1455 into San Vicente Ferrer, one of the patrons of Valencia
